The Leadership and Advocacy Institute to Advance Minnesota’s Parity for Priority Populations (LAAMPP) Institute is a year-long, innovative cross-cultural leadership program adapted from the APPEAL Leadership Model and designed to build capacity of Minnesota’s priority populations to effectively respond to tobacco control and health justice issues.
The APPEAL Leadership Model was designed in 1997 as a culturally tailored training curriculum that builds leadership capacity within diverse Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) communities.
APPEAL, in partnership with both community-based organizations (CBOs) in Long Beach, Richmond, and Seattle, and researchers at CSU Fullerton, conducted a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study using Photovoice and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping to assess the efficacy of pro-tobacco and anti-tobacco influences on AA and NH/PI communities.
