Environmental Influences on Youth

This project was successfully completed in 2007

Co-investigators Rod Lew, Executive Director of APPEAL, and Dr. Sora Park Tanjisiri of California State University, Fullerton, teamed up with four Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community partner organizations in both California and Washington for a three-year participatory research study to understand the environmental and community influences of tobacco use on AAPI youth.

The goals of this project were to:

  • Identify pro- and anti-tobacco characteristics in low-income AAPI populations and compare them with non-AAPI communities, and
  • Study the relationship between these environmental characteristics and tobacco initiation and use among youth in the Cambodian community of Long Beach, CA.

Project Results

Project results will be available with the larger AA and NHPI community through the partners and will assist in advocating for and developing effective tobacco control interventions for the AAPI community.
