Voices in the Debate

This project was successfully completed in 2009

From 2001 through 2009, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded an initiative which focused primarily on training leaders, building capacity, networking with relevant organizations and engaging in advocacy and policy development. APPEAL was one of three national organizations chosen under this initiative to strengthen and expand its role in advocating for tobacco prevention and control at the national, state and local levels within AA & NHPI communities and other communities of color.

Some of APPEAL’s accomplishments during this initiative included:

  • Launching the APPEAL Leadership Model, a community leadership program for youth and adults
  • Funding the APPEAL Social Justice Grantees program
  • Implementing tobacco control policy development on multiple levels
