2025 SPARC Internship with Caroline Nguyen

My time as a SPARC intern for APPEAL has been such an insightful and transformative experience. Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and understanding of community advocacy and importance of public health within the AANHPI communities. I had the privilege of witnessing the powerful role of policy, data research, and storytelling in community transformation. The most meaningful part of my experience was working on Infohub posts, where I researched and created content on the impact of tobacco within the AANHPI communities. This process sharpened my communication skills and helped me understand recent policies and public health implications that are affecting AANHPI communities.

A highlight of my internship was attending my first-ever public health conference, hosted by APPEAL, which was meaningful for me as it centered on my community. I was able to participate hands-on in this space which was both inspiring and exciting. I had the chance to create conference materials, support the APPEAL team’s needs, listen to community leaders in sessions, and be surrounded by advocates who are deeply committed to creating a healthier community. This experience further fuels my passion in public health.

What stood out to me was the supportive and mission-driven environment by the APPEAL team. I felt inspired and encouraged to grow, confident to ask questions, and connect with the APPEAL team. I also had the opportunity to attend impactful trainings and webinars such as “Breathe Free Day” where I was able to participate in listening to community leaders discuss the importance of improving health equity in AANHPI communities by addressing commercial tobacco.

Overall, being a part of the SPARC program has enhanced and strengthened my perspective and passion to continue advocating for health equity in AANHPI communities. I am forever grateful for this experience and the opportunity to be a part of a program that values empowerment in advancing public health education and protecting our communities.

Reflection

My involvement with APPEAL’s SPARC program has been such an engaging and enjoyable experience for me by offering valuable insights into policy, research methods, and effective communication strategies within the realm of Public Health concerning health disparities among AA/NH/PI communities. Throughout my 11-week internship, I had the privilege to collaborate with highly dedicated staff members contributing to the utilization of data and research to deepen our understanding of the impact of tobacco within our communities. One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience with SPARC was the welcoming and kind environment fostered by the amazing program team. I was encouraged to explore new facets of tobacco control with highly engaging resources and opportunities. From policy analysis to informative fact sheets, from engaging in informative webinars to crafting research posts, I gained a diverse understanding of public health and tobacco control efforts. Overall, this internship broadened my perspective on the influence of tobacco companies on our communities, motivating my continued commitment to advocate for meaningful change through policy intervention and community building.
